Art Auctions: Contemporary Art

It is truly a wonderful thing when you consider how much we gain from our appreciation of art, what volumes it speaks about our own culture, and among cultures that make up the world besides our own. It is highly fashionable to understand something of what art is, how it tries to reinterpret our own scope of the world on an artistic level, and yet reveals so much of the human nature behind its creation. Today’s artistic minds are no different in the outgrowth of ideas onto a canvas’ surface, and some are possessed with similar qualities that those artworks considered classics have had in the past.

There is particularly unique insight coming from a lot of contemporary art, or so the label seems to include today’s works of art, with certain vagueness stemming from the lack of a dominant school of thought or ideology. Most date contemporary art beginning towards the late 1960s, most artwork could be defined easily by particular details prior to this, and there were trends of these preferences even through to the 1980s. After the Modernistic period of art was confirmed, much of the direction came to be rather disparate during periods of socio-political change, and many of the distinctions within art have been loosened dramatically.

With some critical opinions decrying the current of contemporary art to be devoid of “true beauty”, critic Donald Kuspit was known to say that art had left the studio and found its’ way into the street, and that may not be that much for the worse with the blurring of many lines presently. Today, contemporary art seems to reflect those issues being faced by the world, and the emphasis on politics seems to have intensified of late. The shift drawing away from an ideal of beauty and purity to a complete opposing force of inspiration from socially oriented art, and often crosses the bounds of proper medium.

Though that is where the argument stops and conjecture begins as critics and artists alike clash in opinion over where the line is particularly between the various categories of thought, and it has been pieces of every different art movement being reevaluated in a similar way, in order to find that place that crosses over between art, artist, and audience, and creates a means for all of them to share space in the comprehensive concept to the artwork. Making the gaps in the points between art and life smaller and smaller, and creating new ways in which to comprehend the ways of the things we view around us.

Engaging mass culture with affecting the boundaries of perception through the means of the relevant issues shaping the world as we know it, and today there are many schools and studios of contemporary art that try to help shape the practice of contemporary art that will translate to the future, allowing us introspective glimpses into the artist’s thoughts. Creating interconnectedness that defies and defines what laws and life may continue to restrict, to analyze, and further define itself as multiple entities within one completely distinct from the sum of its’ parts.

When considering all of this information, at may seem overwhelming at first, but art is not impossible to understand if you concentrate on understanding what your tastes happen to be. When not thinking about these things, it is easy to overlook the value of what you are purchasing, and you may not be able to get the most for what you wish to spend. There are few lessons to learn that do not involve somewhat self-explanatory terms, but one must approach what appeals them with a frugal yet open state of mind, it can be much easier to find a good bargain with this mental state at hand.

Timing can sometimes be necessary to make the deal more lucrative for the buyer, and with some art auctions, it may be difficult to find some grounds on which to begin bidding. However, with studious attention to what you wish your end goal to be, and you will have found a way to acquire at least some kind of facsimile to show for your efforts. Depending upon how deeply you would wish to involve yourself in activities such as local viewings of artwork from contemporary artists, and perhaps you would even find a way to see the stirrings of the creativity from within, by becoming friends with local artists and networking.

How to Understand Abstract Art

How to Understand Abstract Art

How to Understand Abstract Art: title:How to Understand Abstract Art author:Lynne Taetzsch When I paint, I am not attempting to capture the likeness of a landscape or figure. My subject is the painting itself. In spite of this, some viewers immediately try to pin down an image they can name in my art. Not that seeing things in abstract paintings is a crime, even if the artist didn’t put them there. But you miss an opportunity to see more if you spend all your energy trying to turn the painting into something you can name, like a figure or flower or landscape. What do you actually see when you look at the painting? Color, shape, line and texture are the physical elements that combine to make up the image. A selection of dark, heavy shapes may impress you as somber; light, airy images as mystical; balanced, and temperate forms as peaceful. Shape, color and form have meaning in and of themselves. We react emotionally to these elements even if they create no recognizable object for us to hang onto. Thus, a painting of ragged, angular forms in deep reds will evoke an entirely different feeling from one in soft curves of yellow and white. The handling of space, or the illusion of space, is another element in the artist’s toolbox. Are you drawn into a world of three-dimensional space stretching beyond the framework of the painting, as you might be in a landscape? Or are you kept visually taut, as a skater on a pond, skimming across a two-dimensional surface? The impression of depth, perspective, airiness, solidity, and other spatial relations are created and controlled by the artist. The overall composition or design of a painting is what guides the viewer’s eye. Have you ever looked at a painting or photograph and felt it was off balance? One of the big differences between amateur snapshots and professional photographs is the quality of the composition. In an amateur photo, perhaps all the action is centered on the left, with nothing but empty space on the right. The lopsidedness gives you a sense of unease. (Of course an artist may use this unease deliberately as well.) Composition is one of the fundamental tools an art student is taught. The goal is to have a balance of visual elements without making the weight so balanced that the art becomes boring. If everything on the left is exactly equal to the right, and the top to the bottom, you may have balance, but you lose interest. Getting the composition right, or balancing the elements of color, line and shape while maintaining a dynamic tension, is a major preoccupation of the painter. If you add a blue brushstroke to the bottom left-hand corner, for example, you may have to change something in the top right-hand corner because of it. You can’t concentrate on one section at a time, ignoring the rest of the canvas, and expect to end up with a composition that works. Energy is the life force that is present in all good art. This is not something that is easily defined, but it is the opposite state of static flatness. It is this energy that makes a painting speak to you, and makes an artist’s work original and identifiable as the work of that artist. Energy is created out of the artist’s materials and tools, but the end is more than the means in the same sense that a musical composition is so much more than a collection of notes. The next time you look at an abstract or “modern” painting, don’t begin by searching for some identifiable object from your world. Instead, try to enter the world the artist created. Relax and let your eye leisurely wander over the painting’s surface. Let your heart and mind react to its colors, shapes, and textures. Let yourself be drawn into the illusion of its spaces, the action of its lines, and the mood of its atmosphere. Step back and look at the painting from a distance. What is its impact as you approach it? Move up close and explore the intricacies of brushstrokes, paint thicknesses and compositional details. See how the parts are woven together to form the whole. Give the painting time. No artwork can be understood and appreciated in a ten second glance. Good art should grow on you, becoming more interesting and more enjoyable to look at as you live with it. You may still see things in abstract paintings, finding birds and trees and animals hidden in the forms. This is as natural as turning clouds into recognizable shapes. But by opening your eyes to the possibilities of the world the artist created, you may see more than you ever expected to see in abstract art.

Wood Wall Art

Everyone loves to have a home that looks great both on the exterior and the interior. This would mean that you would have to pay a lot of attention to the décor of your house if you want to make it look contemporary and stylish. Such a house would have color-coordinated furniture, curtains, carpets, fittings and other accessories in order to complete the look. All you need to do is to flip through a lifestyle magazine to get a good list of ideas that you could work on for your own home.  The best part is that a few simple changes can have a major impact on the final look of the interior of your home. So how do you achieve this look?

There are several different things that you can try, especially if you are refurbishing or renovating your house, or of course if you have just moved in. One such idea that is becoming very popular today is wall art. Wall art is guaranteed to change the look of any room with a few simple pieces. Wall art comes in different shapes, sizes and designs. Among the several different types of wall art are vinyl wall art, which is very durable and can be easily removed when necessary. Similarly you could always choose to get a professional painter to paint on a wall a design of your choice. There are several types of metal wall art too that would blend well with any other metal fittings you have in the room.

Another common form of wall art today is wood wall art. Wood wall art is being used by a large number of people across the country to accentuate the looks of their rooms. Wood wall art can be found at varying prices depending on the type of wood being used for the wood wall art, and the size of the wood wall art piece.

You could also choose to go for lovely pieces of handcrafted wood wall wart which are usually more expensive. Wood wall art carvings too can be found in several stores. The wood wall art could be a carving of different shapes or even figures and animals to go with the rest of the décor in your room.

Wood wall art, as mentioned above, can also be found for very reasonable prices at different markets, if you do not wish to spend too much on home décor but still want your home to look elegant.

Evolving from an Art Buyer to an Art Collector

Evolving from an Art Buyer to an Art Collector
The difference between someone who collects art with the discriminating eye of an art lover and an art buyer is profound.  It might be compared to the difference between someone who buys and sells cars for a living and a collector of vintage and fine automobiles.  The word “buyer” is pivotal and making that distinction.  It is true that you as an art collector do from time to time buy art.  And it is true that you can purchase a fine piece of art and after some period of time, you may find yourself selling it for a significant profit.

So the investment side of art collection is real and cannot be denied.  But the first major difference between a buyer and collector is the investment value of a piece of art you wish to add to your collation is not the primary motivation you may have for making that purchase decision.  But there are other significant modes of behavior a true collector will exhibit that set him or her apart from a person who buys art simply for monetary purposes.

* A collector specializes in certain genres of art, art movements, geographical areas and artists whereas a buyer will buy and sell whatever “book value” tells him is a good purchase.  As your knowledge of the art world deepens, it is natural to become a collector because you have reached a point that collecting those great pieces of art in your chosen genre are part of your love of that art.  A collector will demonstrate a ravenous appetite for knowledge about the genre and artists of his or her specific interest eventually gathering an encyclopedic knowledge of the art that they seek to collect.

* A collector knows galleries.  An art gallery is a very different place from a museum or even an art show.  An art gallery is essentially a place of business.  But there are modes of behavior and systems in place for communicating details about each artwork that is important to a collector considering a purchase.  For example, most galleries use a system of colored dots that are put on artwork on display which are significant to the sale status of that piece.  As you invest more and more time into your love of art collecting, you will also become well known at galleries who frequently display and merchandize the type of art you collect.  As a result, the gallery owners will know who you are and you will be regularly notified if a piece in your genre is on display and available for purchase.

* A collector knows how much they can do within their financial boundaries and invest in their passion for art collecting.  You already know who the great masters are in the genre that you focus on for your collection.  But there is a huge price difference between buying an original of a great master versus a quality print of that same piece.  Within your genre, there are also fine artists from the same time in art history that the genre was at its pinnacle but who were lesser known and as such, their works are less expensive.  By knowing your niche, you can continue your love of art collecting without the frustration of attempting to collect in a range outside your abilities.

Never let your existing body of knowledge about art collection keep you from always learning more about this fascinating avocation.  Galleries commonly conduct seminars and discussion groups about the basics and the nuances of art collection.  By keeping yourself informed of the language and the lay of the land of art collecting, you will avoid pitfalls many fall into and your enjoyment of art collecting will be rich and full.

Garden wall Art

Having an exquisite landscape without garden wall art is as worthless as a Romeo without his Juliet. Paying careful attention to detail has always been the key factor of many an artist’s success. Therefore strive to enhance the natural beauty of the external area of your garden by weaving garden wall art in to its silken chemise. Some professional garden designers say that plants are the key factor that completes a garden design. Others on the other hand believe that bolder garden features such as artificial fountains or sculptures provide the crowning finish for any landscape. Imagine all this surrounded by bare walls that reflect no personality whatsoever. Don’t leave your garden design thirsting for more once completion.

Garden wall art refers to any pattern that is engraved or painted on to your garden wall. Yes, wall art does not only refer to paintings. Garden wall art especially promotes intricate metal, wood, concrete, clay or marble wall sculpturing in order to give the garden design a more refined touch.  Many garden designers actually build the whole garden design around the chosen wall art. Every artist needs a staring point, and garden designing is no exception. Therefore choosing a type of garden wall art that best reflects ones preference and personality is recommended because it is always easier to build around something that you love.

An interesting advantage of garden wall art is that you do not always require a professional to implement it. For more basic types of wall art, all you might need is a hammer, a screw and a big imagination. You can decorate your garden walls with a clay figurine that you are partial to if it suits you and your garden. You can also put up attractive grills on your walls to enable plants to grow along it in order to give it a more naturalistic effect.  Using a garden plaque in the center of a vine covered wall is also an extremely attractive garden wall art idea that was used in early Britain.

Therefore it is important for you to understand that your garden wall art does not have to be a stereotype. Go crazy with the idea. Do what you want. Let your walls reflect your inner personality. After all, there’s no point in having an attractive garden if you haven’t left your mark in it. Wall art unlike other garden features, is flexible enough to cover all tastes and styles.

Kitchen ART

The kitchen is central in homes today and it should provide inspiration to those working in it. To serve this purpose the kitchen should be decorated to give the occupants a sense of comfort and pleasantness. Ways in which a kitchen can be decorated are many but the most popular is wall art. Themes such as Tuscan style, modern, and contemporary, and country styles are some of the more trendy approaches to kitchen wall art.

The Tuscan style kitchen wall art makes use of warm and rich colors like deep reds and purples, oranges and olive greens. Murals that feature the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, paintings depicting the rich wines and grapes of the area and illustrations of the stunning vineyards of northern Italy are a few ideas of what this elegant kitchen wall art style would entail. This art style gives the ambience of richness and warmth.

Modern and contemporary art has an expansive variety of wall art; abstract art, photography, and pop are just some of the many ideas you can incorporate into your kitchen wall art. Some like to have a theme of black and white when decorating their kitchen walls or on the other hand a striking multicolored collage. This style of kitchen wall art is futuristic and innovative and one can let their imagination run wild when choosing this style of art.

In comparison to the modern and contemporary style, the country style is more rustic and quaint. Depictions of fresh fruits and vegetables, rustic signs, roosters and other barnyard animals are the common features of country style art. No rules govern this type of decoration; one simply has to decorate with the feeling of wanting to create a warm and cozy feeling in the kitchen; it is open to any definition that one would have of “country”. The end result of such a kitchen wall art is a pleasant and inviting mood, a charming and cozy country kitchen.

Other appealing themes of kitchen wall art include food and cuisine art, alcohol art, pasta art, international cuisine art, herbs and spices, and fruits and vegetables. Given all these various styles making a choice seems difficult but in selecting from them, one should pick the one that best portrays you and the one that will inspire you to work happily and creatively in the kitchen. All the time spent decorating will well be worth it in the end because being in the kitchen will be enjoyable indeed.

Find the Artist Within

Find the Artist Within
by Eileen Bergen
The Artful Crafter

Can anyone be an artist?
People admiring my work often say, “I could never do that!” I say, “Yes, you can!”
Eight years ago, during a very difficult time in my career in finance (Downsizings, layoffs – let’s not talk about it, OK?), my company sent me to a development workshop for female executives.
I came out of a particularly thought-provoking discussion group and penned the following very prophetic free verse.
Threads They Said
Mimi said, “Why don’t you paint again?”
I said, “There’s no time. I crunch numbers now.”
Carole said, “You can do it!”
I said, “No. I don’t think so.”
Cheryl said, “You have an artist within. Reach down. Bring it out.”
I said, “My numbers … they pay the bills.
Though, God knows, they don’t feed the soul anymore!”
Martha said, “There’s a strength within you.”
I asked, “They why do I feel so weak, so beaten?”
Bob said, “Reach for the sky. Be your mother’s daughter.
Write poetry. Perhaps the answer lies within.”
I reached. I created. I wrote. I discovered.
The threads came together.
I design tee-shirts now.
On a glorious sunny beach.
I write my musings in between.
And share them with other artists
— like me.
painting1
I didn’t really dwell on these thoughts at the time since I ended up taking early retirement and had no intention of going back to work.
“Threads They Said” got filed away with my other work files. I only unearthed it recently and was stunned to realize how it all has come true.
Except we don’t live on a glorious sunny beach, we live on a mountainside overlooking a beautiful lake – close enough for me! And now you are some of the other artists I share my musings with!
I believe anyone with a creative eye can be an artist. If you know what you like when you see it, you can be an artist. If you know what someone else will like, you can be a commercial artist. You only need to find your medium or craft.
publicdomain
To find the artistic spirit within you:
1. Think about your abilities, not your dis-abilities; what you can do, not what you can’t. Maybe you’re good with the computer. Think graphic arts. Maybe you wield a mean needle. Think of practical sewn items to which you can add artistic touches.
Today with the endless supply of craft materials and kits to get you started, there’s something for everyone – or I should say – something for every artist.
2. Determine your bliss. I once read that if a woman thinks back to what she most enjoyed when she was between 8 and 11, she can identify her bliss. For men, it’s between 10 and 14. They mature later, you know – some women would say never. If, at that age, you were always making “stuff” (doesn’t matter what) and loved having your own crayons (that no one else was allowed – under penalty of death – to touch) and maybe your own set of colored pencils, art and crafting could be your bliss.
If you took particular joy in actually producing something – an end product – rather than just messing with all those neat (or should I say, messy) paints, you almost certainly have an artist within.
3. Browse a local crafts superstore or Internet crafting sites (please start by browsing around TheArtfulCrafter.com!). Go up and down the aisles, whether virtual or real, and see what appeals to you. Purchase a few kits. [Aside: If you intend to sell what you make from the get-go, be sure to consider what will also appeal to your future customers.]
4. Don’t be afraid to try something new. To me, a sub-definition of artist is “someone who is always trying something new” – new techniquesFind Article, new media. You have little to lose – the cost of a kit or a few tubes of paint – and very much to gain!

Golden Country — Escritoire

Today I’m going to buy sunflower oil. I’m imagining a small glass vial filled with viscous, tinted liquid. The color of Versaille’s gates on a bright morning, a glass of Bordeaux white suffused with light from the setting sun, Loire Valley hills blanketed in fields of the plant from which the oil is derived. Tournesols, […]
